- from 02.02.2010
Germany’s loveliest hiking trail is located in the Hunsrück –
Narrow paths, rushing brooks, and breathtaking panoramas: The Saar-Hunsrück Climb between the gemstone town Idar-Oberstein and the Roman city Trier was chosen Hiking Trail of the Year 2009: The Climb meanders over 114 mi/184 km through one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Germany.
“Diversity characterizes the individual day legs; history and stories literally lie at hikers’ feet,” according to the new hiking guide “Better Hiking: Saar-Hunsrück Climb” (ideemedia € 10.95) in describing the 13 legs through deep valleys, wide-ranging forests, and magnificent heights. Together with the new Soonwald Climb, the Saar-Hunsrück Climb joins for the first time the two top hiking trails, the Rhine Trail and the Eifel Climb.
Besides a detailed route description, the hiking experts Ulrike Poller and Wolfgang Todt introduce on 176 pages everything the hiker needs to know on and off the route. In their praise, both authors write, “Germany’s most awarded premium hiking trail between Idar-Oberstein and (depending on the route) Trier or the famous Saar Bend near Mettlach offers hiking experiences of the highest quality.” The original route of the Saar-Hunsrück Climb just became even more attractive in recent months through numerous new trails; it has also improved, enabling the hiker to now gain an impressive, close-up nature experience throughout over 110 mi/180 km.
Whoever wishes to begin at the Rhine can reach Kirn via the new Soonwald Climb beginning in Bingen. The Nahe Heights Way closes the gap to the gemstone town Idar-Oberstein, where the Saar-Hunsrück Climb begins. In their new hiking guide, Ulrike Poller and Wolfgang Todt describe in 20 chapters altogether 205 mi/330 km of singular hiking enjoyment of the highest quality through the magnificent landscapes of the Hunsrück and the Soonwald. And they link up the Rhine to the Nahe, to the Moselle, and to the Saar.
